Lviv. Downtown
The historic center of Lviv, or Old Town, is the central urban area from which Lviv began its political, economic,and cultural development. This oldest part of the Old Town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site inDecember 1998.
The main factors in the formation of the ancient Downtown were relief, natural conditions, and hydrology. Atthe end of the 19th century, because of the glazing of the main waterway of the Poltva River, which in ancienttimes limited the historical center from the west, the main axis of the modern center was formed - SvobodyAvenue.
Defensive walls, which surrounded the City Center with two spindles, were dismantled at the beginning of the19th century. Since then, new construction has begun along ancient transport routes that radially divergedfrom the historic center. A modern feature of the Old Town was the pedestrian zone in the medieval quartersbetween Svobody Avenue and Pidvalna Street, centered on Rynok Square. Around the City Center on ancientdefensive ramparts in the XIX century formed a kind of ring of squares.

Історичний центр Льво́ва, або Старе́ місто, — центральний міський район, звідки Львів починав свій політичний, економічний та культурний розвиток. Цю найдавнішу частину Старого міста у грудні 1998 року було внесено до списку Світової спадщини ЮНЕСКО.
Основними чинниками формування давнього Середмістя були рельєф, природні умови та гідрологія. Наприкінці ХІХ століття внаслідок засклепіння головної водної артерії річки Полтви, що у давнину обмежувала історичний центр від заходу, було утворено основну вісь сучасного центру — проспект Свободи.
Оборонні мури, що двома пряслами оточували Середмістя, були розібрані ще на початку ХІХ століття. Відтоді розпочалося нове будівництво вздовж давніх транспортних шляхів, що радіально розходилися від історичного центру.
Сучасною ознакою Старого міста стала пішохідна зона у середньовічних кварталах між проспектом Свободи та вул. Підвальною, з центром на площі Ринок. Навколо Середмістя на давніх оборонних валах ще у ХІХ столітті утворилося своєрідне кільце скверів.
