Ostroh. Castle Complex of Princes Ostrozki

The first written mention of Ostroh city dates back to 1100. The city was part of the Volodymyr-Volynsky Principality, and from 1199 became part of the Halytsko-Volynsky Principality. Now it is situated in the Rivne Region.

The Ostroh Press was the second oldest printing press in Ukraine, founded in 1578 by Ivan Fedorovych (Fedorov) with the financial backing of PrinceKostiantyn Vasyl Ostrozky at the prince’s castle in Ostroh, Volhynia.

The castle of Ostroh is built on a low hill and occupies a small oval area of the territory. The eastern and southern part of the building overlooks a steep brae of about 20m. The remaining sides of the Castle are separated from the city by the deep ditches and ravines that add to the castle’s safety and inaccessibility, as well as it’s defensive capability.

The Ostroh castle consists the three buildings from the XIV-XV centuries that include the Stone Tower that used to be living quarters, the Epiphany Cathedral and the New Tower. At the beginning of the 20^th century the Castle structure was completed by an addition of the Bell Tower.

Острог. Замковий комплекс князів Острозьких

Перша письмова згадка про Острог датується 1100 роком. Місто входило до складу Володимиро-Волинського князівства, а з 1199 року до Галицько-Волинського князівства. Тепер це місто належить до Рівненської області.

Острозька друкарня була другою після Львову найстарішою друкарнею України. Відкрита у 1578 році Іваном Федоровичем (Федоровим) з фінансовою підтримкою Принца Костянтина Василя Острозького у замку Принца.

Острозький замок побудований на невисокому пагорбі і займає невелику овальну ділянку території (0,7 га). Східна і південна частини будівлі виходять на крутий схил пагорба, висота якого приблизно 20 м. Решта сторін замку відділялися від усього міста глибокими ровами, які були поглибленими ярами. Це збільшувало недоступність і безпеку замку, а також і його обороноздатність.

Ансамбль Острозького замку складається з трьох будівель, побудованих у XIV-XV ст.  за часів династії Острозьких - Кам'яної Вежі (житлове приміщення), Богоявленського собору та Нової Башти. На початку XX століття композицію замку доповнила дзвіниця.
