Ternopil

Ternopil is one of the most fascinating cities in Western Ukraine. Located in the heart of Galicia, this fine city absorbed its soul through its unique blend of Austrian architecture, the beauty of Podillia and the tranquility of Volyn. 

The almost 500-year-old Ternopil (given the first written mention in 1540) has a significant and impressive history, connected with its first castle, which served as a defense structure against the Turks and Tatars in the XVI - XVII centuries, and later as a residence for local rulers. The true adornment of the city is the pond of Ternopil - a large artificial reservoir on the Seret River, located in close proximity to the city center. 

During the First World War (from August 1914 to July 1917) the city was occupied by the Russian troops and served as the capital of the Ternopil province, during the military governance. While retreating, the Russian troops destroyed and damaged most of the city structures; there were assaults, robberies, and violence. 

Further destruction was caused by World War II, and it was even more painful, when close to 85% of the city structures were destroyed. This was a massive loss of life brought on by the second world war and half-century of soviet occupation, accompanied by political repression, poverty and emigration.

Тернопіль - одне з найцікавіших міст Західної України. Знаходячись у самісінькому її центрі, файне місто ввібрало неповторний колорит Галичини з архітектурою австрійського часу, красу Поділля та спокій Волині.

У майже 500-літнього Тернополя (1540 рік – перша письмова згадка) значна та цікава історія, пов’язана, в першу чергу, із замком, який служив не тільки для оборони від турків і татар у XVI – XVII століттях, а й резиденцією місцевих правителів. Окрасою міста є Тернопільський став - велика штучна водойма, розташована на річці Серет практично в центрі міста.

В роки I світової війни (від серпня 1914 до липня 1917 років) місто було зайняте російськими військами і було центром Тернопільської губернії воєнного генерал-губернаторства. Відступаючи, частини російської армії розгромили місто; при цьому були грабунки, насильство, погроми.

 Ще болючіших руйнувань - було знищено 85% міста - і ще більш масових людських втрат принесла IIсвітова війна та півстолітня радянська окупація, що супроводжувалася політичними репресіями, злиднями та еміграцією.
