Zhovkva. Town Hall and Church of St. Lawrence

Zhovkva is a former royal city, which lies 25 kilometers west from Lviv on the way to the Polish border. By the number of historical and architectural monuments, it occupies one of the leading places in Ukraine. 

Zhovka was built according to the concept of "ideal cities" of the Renaissance. The essence of the concept was to create a balanced planning structure of the city - each architectural object was given a certain location relative to others.

In front of the castle, the builders of the city laid the main shopping area - the Market. Its rich architectural ensemble consists of townhouses with high roofs, attic finishes, from the West and the East, and the Church of St. Lawrence in the West. Defensive walls with casemates and wooden battle galleries and two city gates, Zvirynetska and Hlynska, adjoin the square on both sides of the castle.

The old town hall used to stand in the middle of the square. In 1832 it was dismantled. The new one was erected near the castle on the site of casemates and barracks in 1932. Designed in stylized forms with elements of the Art Deco style according to the project of Lviv architect Bronislaw Victor. Now it is one of the architectural accents of the central square of the city.

The Church of St. Lawrence was built in 1606-1618 on an artificial embankment, laid by the captured Turks as the ancestral mausoleum of the Zolkiewski family and the pantheon of knightly glory. By the number and significance of burials of prominent figures of the Polish state, the church is often called the "Little Wawel". The temple is considered the largest, most beautiful and richest building of Zhovkva. Its bell tower was called the "Little Leaning Tower of Pisa". 

The church was decorated with huge battle canvases with images of the victories of the troops of the Commonwealth on the Turks and Moscow in the XVII century. Now these paintings are exhibited in the halls of the branches of the Lviv National Art Gallery named after B.G. Voznitsky – in Zolochiv and Olesko castles.

Жовква –колишнє королівське місто, що лежить у 25 кілометрах на захід від Львова по дорозі до польського кордону. За кількістю історичних та архітектурних пам’яток вона займає  одне з провідних місць в Україні. 

Жовка збудована за концепцією «ідеальних міст»  доби Ренесансу. Суть концепції полягала у створенні збалансованої планувальної структури міста — кожному архітектурному об’єктові відводилося певне розміщення відносно інших. 

Перед замком будівничі міста заклали головну торгову площу — Ринок. Її багатий архітектурний ансамбль творять кам’яниці із високими дахами, підсіннями та аттиковими завершенням, із заходу та сходу та костел святого Лаврентія із заходу. Обабіч замку до площі прилягали оборонні мури із казематами і дерев’яними бойовими галереями та дві міські брами — Звіринецька та Глинська.

Давня ратуша раніше стояла посеред площі. У 1832 році її розібрали. Нову звели біля замку на місці казематів та казарм у 1932 році  у стилізованих формах з елементами стилю ар деко за проєктом львівського архітектора Броніслава Віктора. Тепер вона є одним  з архітектурних акцентів центральної площі міста. 

Костел святого Лаврентія збудований у 1606–1618 роках на штучному насипі, закладеному полоненими турками, як родовий мавзолей родини Жолкевських та пантеон лицарської слави. За кількістю і значимістю поховань видатних діячів Польської держави костел часто називають «Малим Вавелем». Храм вважають найбільшою, найгарнішою, найбагатшою спорудою Жовкви. Його дзвіниця отримала назву «малої Пізанської вежі». 

Костел прикрашали величезні батальні полотна з зображеннями перемог військ Речі Посполитої на турками та Московією у XVII столітті. Зараз ці полотна експонуються у залах філій Львівської національної галереї мистецтв імені Б. Г. Возницького – у Золочівському та Олеському замках.
